The San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park is known for its large animal and bird collections, but one of its smaller attractions also delights many visitors.
The 1,800-acre park, east of Escondido in San Pasqual Valley, has a bonsai pavilion that draws people from as far away as Japan and England.
Housed in a botanical area at the park’s northern end, the pavilion includes more than 60 miniature trees planted in pots and other containers and carefully shaped in specific designs.
Members of the San Diego Bonsai Club maintain the trees, which include specimens that are as much as 400 hundred years old.
