Grandpa’s Birthday Coming Soon

Written by admin on March 9, 2010

So, it’s getting to be that time where I need to start thinking about a birthday gift for my Grandfather. I need to start thinking about what to get him somewhat early since he’s so difficult to buy for. He’s a big time golfer, but, he has so much golfing stuff – it’s hard to get him anything he doesn’t already have and past that, everybody gets him some type of golfing thing. So, I thought about a watch. He’s always needing to know the time out on the course and has this old, beat up watch that he uses. I have a Casio G Shock watch that I just love and he commented on at Christmas when he came to visit, so, I’ m thinking that would be an awesome present, no?

Rain Rain…Go Away

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

Everyone knows we could use the rain. That pesky drought thing is still a concern. But do the storms have to keep coming on the weekends?

Apparently so.

County residents can enjoy a mostly fair day Friday, with some high clouds and temperatures in the low 60s at the coast and the mid-60s inland. But then a cold storm off the Northern California coast is expected to drop south by Saturday. A cold front should bring widespread, steady rain by late afternoon or evening.

Once that front passes, the cold air behind it could bring heavy, scattered showers through Sunday. Thunderstorms with hail are possible, and waterspouts could occur off the coast.

Carlsbad Flower Fields Now Open

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

If you’ve never done this, I can’t explain to you in words how much you’re missing out!

The fields, which are packed with thickly petalled ranunculus flowers, attract more than 100,000 visitors each year. Locals bring visiting relatives, tourists arrive by the busload, and school children come for the day on field trips to learn about the life cycle of plants.

Starting this weekend, visitors will have a new way to get into the flower-growing operation, which sits at the intersection of busy Palomar Airport Road and Paseo del Norte. Construction is about to conclude on a special right-turn-only lane, which will allow westbound drivers on Palomar Airport Road to go into the fields’ parking lot without turning onto Paseo del Norte.

Knitting For Charity In Fallbrook

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

There’s a whole lot of knitting going on at Fallbrook Library this month.

Since the beginning of the month, the library’s customers, librarians and volunteers have been knitting and crocheting squares to make blankets for charities that benefit needy Americans and displaced Haitian earthquake survivors.

Fallbrook librarians were inspired to organize the charitable program by John Steinbeck’s “Grapes of Wrath,” the classic Depression-era novel being promoted by the county’s Big Read collective reading program.

The knitting program will end March 13, along with the Big Read.

Vista To Keep Music In Schools

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

*clap clap clap*

Vista Unified School District trustees voted Thursday to keep music teachers and health technicians at elementary schools next year, but made more than $500,000 in other budget cuts.

District officials are working to slash $15 million in spending from next year’s budget in response to funding cuts at the state level.

The board voted in January to eliminate the music program, but trustees asked district officials to continue looking for money to pay for it. They found that money by cutting magnet school funding by 10 percent, eliminating some administrative spending, and taking $250,000 from money set aside to pay for benefits for retired employees.

For the last three years, the district’s 10,000 or so students in kindergarten through fifth grade have gotten 30-minute music lessons once every three weeks.

At Thursday’s meeting, Chloe Smith, an eighth-grader at Vista Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, sang an a capella version of “Colors of the Wind” from the film “Pocahontas” to thank the board for retaining the music teachers.

Getting New Carpet

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

Well, even though I have a somewhat newer home, I think it’s time for me to start to look into getting some new carpet for the place. First off, I didn’t really like the pad that the carpet company installed and one of the great things about having new puppies is they like to destroy the carpet in a variety of ways. So, now that they’ve grown out of that stage, I’m in the market for some new carpet. One of my favorites places after looking around is Tufenkian Carpets. I love how you can save 10% on your carpet if you register online and they make it very clear they DO NOT use child labor which is something you really need to be careful of.  I’m going to look a little more, see what I can find, and hopefully make a purchase here shortly with their area rug sale that they’ve got going on.

Anybody Bored?

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

I admit it – I get bored at work. lol. I also get bored at home, a lot…and I’m a big movie fan. But, I hate buying all of these DVD’s…they add up. Plus, I’m not a person that likes to re-watch a movie I’ve seen more than a couple times, so, I’ve started watching online movies and I totally love it. The selection is endless and they’re brand new movies too! Can’t really have it much better than that.

Have You Tried A Dating Site?

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

So, I was talking to one of my co-workers today and she told me she was afraid of using one of those online dating sites…so I asked her why. And of course, she hit me with the “well, you really don’t know the person”…but really, how is that different than real life? You meet a person at the bar and just because you had a drink with them you assume you know them? I don’t buy that – never have and most likely never will. So I thought I’d show her some headlines for dating sites and hopefully convince her that they’re okay to use and tell her that many of my friends have met their significant other online. I think she’s much more open to it now…I caught her filling out a profile a few minutes ago. haha

Sister Is Having A Baby!!

Written by admin on March 5, 2010

So, I awoke today to some awesome news – my sister is pregnant! Even more crazy is that she’s over two months along and wasn’t even aware. I guess she went to the doctor yesterday cause she didn’t think things were all going…uh, normal, for a lack of better terms. He told her that she might be pregnant…they did a few tests, and boom – he hit her with the news. Funny thing is, she didn’t believe him, so she went home and did a test anyway…haha…and of course it turned up positive. So, now it’s time for me to be an Uncle. I guess my first duty is to start helping her out with some maternity clothes, yes?! It’s what a good brother would do! I’m so happy for her – congrats!

Oceanside Youth Golf Program

Written by admin on March 3, 2010

Golf might seem like an odd way to help kids do better in school and improve their manners, but a program based on that idea has worked magic in San Diego, organizers say, and may soon come to Oceanside.

The nonprofit Pro Kids Golf Academy wants to replicate in North County a program it started in San Diego’s City Heights neighborhood in 1994. The group has tentatively identified property next to the Oceanside Municipal Golf Course as a good site.

So far, Callaway Golf Foundation has pledged $2 million toward the idea. Pro Kids hopes to raise an additional $2 million.

I’ll have more information on this awesome event when I get it.
